I’ve been subscribing to and reviewing beauty boxes now for several months and have primarily been sticking to the more inexpensive boxes to review such as Ipsy, BirchBox, Walmart, etc. However, after 2 very disappointing months with both Ipsy and Birchbox I decided to ditch both of those subscriptions and take my chances on BoxyCharm. BoxyCharm is a slightly more expensive subscription box service ($21 monthly) but what I had heard is that the samples are larger and are more makeup-oriented, which is what I was hoping for.
Man-Oh-Man – BoxyCharm did NOT disappoint! My first box was the December 2014 box and I was blown away by not only the quality of the products included, but the very generous full sizes of all products except for one – and that one was even pretty generous in size.
In this month’s box I received the following items:
- Coastal scents Revealed Pallet – Full Size – Retails for $39.95 (Coastal Scents website says its available for $19.95)
- Lina Lashes Luxury Mink Lashes – Full Size – Retail for $30.00
- Mistura Beauty Solutions Retractable Beauty Brush – Full Size – Retails for $19.99
- Be a Bombshell Lipgloss – Full Size – Retails for $14.00
- Eva NYC Hair Oil – Full Size – Retails for somewhere between $7.00 – $12.00
It goes without saying that I definitely made back my $21.00 investment on this box – the products included totaled a whopping $110 – $115! I am very impressed.
The Coastal Scents pallet was my most surprising item. In a BirchBox a couple of months back I received a sample of 4 of the shades from this upcoming pallet. I’ve never tried them out – the sample sizes of the little pans in the plastic test plate were so tiny I didn’t even bother. However, I do have to say that this pallet is actually quite nice to be giving away for basically “free” in a subscription box. I did use the pallet this weekend before going out and where as the colors aren’t quite as vibrant and pigmented as the Urban Decay Naked pallets, the colors in this pallet are quite similar. It’s a good pallet to have on hand and the packaging is nice and slim and sturdy with a magnetic closure.
I’ve tried some Be a Bombshell products before in other subscription boxes and their lip products are pretty decent. The color I got this month is a dusty/mauve/pink color. I don’t typically use lip gloss very often, but in the winter I do sometimes like to slather it over lipstick products for a little extra moisture.
The Mistura brush is very soft and nice. I don’t particularly have a need for a retractable brush because I don’t typically do my makeup on the go – but this one will be put in to rotation on my vanity so I can test it out. The only thing I am concerned about with this product is having to wash it – I’m hoping that the design of the retractable casing doesn’t hold in water when I have to do a thorough hand washing instead of just a spot-clean.
I never wear false lashes unless it’s Halloween or some big glamorous party (which, lets face it – I do not go to big, glamorous parties). However, I’ve always been interested in all natural mink lashes because I hear they are supposed to be really lush and fabulous. These Lina Lashes definitely do look very fluffy and long. I like the fact that it mentions on both the packaging and the BoxyCharm insert card that they are 100% handmade and gathered without hurting the mink in any way. Go Lina Lashes – nobody wants you to hurt those little mink critters for the sake of beauty! Also, the box is very nice with a plastic tray to re-store the lashes on and a magnetic closure so that you can re-seal them up after you remove them and clean them so they’re ready to go for another wear.
I passed the Eva NYC Oil on to my husband. Lets face it, his Filipino hair is far more spectacular than mine will ever be and he puts far more time and effort in to his hair than I do. He needs a little extra moisture during the winter months and he did try it the other day and said it felt nice on his scalp. I just can’t fathom putting oil in my hair – I don’t have particularly oily hair, but I don’t want to put anything in it that may make it feel or act that way.
